Guardians: If you’re tooling around Monterey Park you might as well stop in at the San Gabriel Nursery. If you make it past the Orchid zone, the air starts to smell like Sweet Ozmanthus and pretty soon you’ll be trying to fit two pots into the back of your car. Not a bad way to go. If you’re looking for Michelia Alba, they have these too, but you have to bring a forklift and your black Amex card.

Hope: Our cauliflower sprouts are nestled in the ground, and when they grow up we hope they become soup, or gratin, or something! Courtesy of Chocolate & Zucchini this is cauliflower turmeric soup. We added toasted almonds instead of hazelnuts, and ground ginger, cumin, and chili powder instead of curry, because we just didn’t have any. The sprinkle of greens in the photo are wandering leaves of kale. Heed the warnings about everything turning yellow when you use this much turmeric though: lips, bowls, spoons, sinks, etc.
